In line with the opening of Virtual Ryosokuin - a project developed with Ryosokuin Temple of Kenninji of Rinzai Zen School that explores the multiple-dimensional purpose of the temple, we jointly hosted “Ryosokuin Multiverse Exhibition”- an art exhibition where real and virtual worlds synchronise.

This exhibition is open to the public as part of a framework of the XEXE project that proposes new means of communication, promoted by Vice Abbot of Toryo Ito of Ryosokuin Zen Temple. It is an exhibition that revolves around the “MOXE” project that aims to gain new perspectives from experiences by utilising technology from communications of various styles presented in the XEXE project. A collaborative art exhibition and a brand new installation utilising AI technologies were exhibited by the technological creative firm “THINK AND SENSE”, who has been promoting collaboration in the “MOXE” project. “Ryoskuin Multiverse Exhibition” was held simultaneously at two venues: Ryosokuin Temple of Higashiyama Ward of Kyoto city and online “Virtual Ryosokuin”.

“Imaginary Karesansui”

This installation creates a landscape where an imaginary Karesansui and a real Karesansui (dray landscape garden) can be viewed from the room of Hojyo. The footage of a mythical Japanese dry landscape garden was generated using GAN (Generative Adversarial Network) by mixing noise data and numerous pictures of dry landscape gardens, and they are displayed in the Hojyo room in a way that the footages overlap the scenery of the real dry landscape garden. A computer facing the view from the Hojyo room continues to detect objects and scenery captured by a camera using a technology called “Semantic Segmentation”. By developing a structure where an out-of-context imaginary dry landscape garden created by AI technology is re-recognised by context-estimating AI technology itself, we attempt to generate a context from a mixture of imaginary and real conditions. Imaginary sceneries continue to be autonomously generated out of contexts. We question the meaning of “context” itself by juxtaposing generated sceneries far from the inherent meaning of Karesansui and the contexts.

Exhibits of Digital Fabrication Artworks

We exhibited digitally fabricated products of the past digital works created through the collaboration between Ryosokuin and THINK AND SENSE. By displaying artworks in various rooms of the Ryosokuin Temple, we have also designed a space where the temple’s long history meets products made with the latest technology.

Virtual Ryosokuin

This exhibition is open to the public in accordance with “Ryosokuin Multiverse Exhibition” held at Ryosokuin zen temple in Kyoto. The virtual version of the exhibition held at Ryosokuin Kyoto is now on display. The past digital works created by collaboration between Ryosokuin and THINK AND SENSE were converted into products using digital fabrication technology and displayed at Diasyoin. An artwork created from high-precision 3D scanned data of the garden of the temple is displayed on Fusuma (Japanese-style doors). Please enjoy the collaboration between the temple venue and the presentation only possible in the virtual space. In Hojyou, the concept of “XEXE” – activities that redefine underlying objectives and explore to expand human possibilities, is explained as well as the concept of “MOXE”- our challenge including Virtual Ryosokuin that aims to gain new perspectives through collaboration with technologies in XEXE.
